1967 Topps #258 Lee Maye

About Lee Maye
Houston sent Maye and Ken Retzer to the Cleveland Indians on January 4, 1967, and took back Jim Landis, Jim Weaver, and Doc Edwards. The deal set the pattern for the rest of his playing days: second-division clubs, and duty mostly against right-handed pitching. He hit .259 in 115 games for Cleveland, slugging .444, his best mark since he left Milwaukee, and wore number 26. Card 258 sits in the middle of the set as a third-series number.
Arthur Lee Maye was an outfielder who spent thirteen big-league seasons between 1959 and 1971, most of them with the Milwaukee Braves, followed by the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, and Chicago White Sox. Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and raised in Los Angeles, he made the All-City team at Jefferson High School and signed with the Braves out of school in June 1954. He batted left, threw right, and was one of the fastest men in the game, timed under ten seconds in the 100-yard dash and successful on 38 of 44 stolen base attempts from 1960 through 1963. He won the Braves' left field job in 1961 and had his best year in 1964, when he led the National League with 44 doubles and batted .304. Shoulder, knee, and back injuries and a 1962 respiratory illness kept interrupting him. Away from the park he was a working rhythm and blues singer under his full name, leading the Los Angeles doo-wop group Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns and recording as a solo act for decades. He finished at .274 with 94 home runs and 419 runs batted in, and died in Riverside, California, in 2002.
