1967 Topps #260 Jim Lefebvre

About Jim Lefebvre
Card #260 in the 1967 Topps set's third print series pictures Lefebvre with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He opened at third base again, becoming the first Los Angeles Dodger to start there on Opening Day in consecutive seasons, but a pulled leg muscle re-injured at the end of May and a sore left shoulder later diagnosed as a partial dislocation cost him a month and more. He batted .261 with eight home runs and 50 RBI in 494 at-bats. With Sandy Koufax retired, the club dropped to 73-89 a year after winning the pennant.
Jim "Frenchy" Lefebvre was a switch-hitting infielder who spent all eight of his major league seasons, 1965 through 1972, with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The son of a well-known Southern California hitting instructor, he was taught to bat from both sides at age ten, starred at Morningside High School and signed with the Dodgers in early 1962 for $11,000. Three minor league seasons later he won the second base job out of spring training and joined first baseman Wes Parker, shortstop Maury Wills and third baseman Jim Gilliam to form the first all switch-hitting infield in major league history. He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1965 and a World Series winner that same autumn, then posted his best numbers in 1966, when he was an All-Star and the Dodgers took a second straight pennant. Leg, shoulder, wrist and ankle injuries cut into the seasons that followed, and he shuttled between second and third base as younger Dodgers arrived, playing his last big league game in 1972. He spent four more seasons in Japan with the Lotte Orions, then came back to coach six major league clubs and to manage the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers.
