The story on this card

Shaw made the Mets' Opening Day roster out of spring training and spent his entire rookie season in New York's bullpen, going 4-5 with three saves and a 2.98 ERA across 40 relief appearances. He struggled early but settled in, posting a 2.08 ERA over his final 29 outings, before a six-month military call-up ended his season in mid-August. This card is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue shared with Gary Sutherland, part of the set's seventh and final print series, a high number. A journeyman left-handed reliever for four clubs from 1967-1972, best remembered for winning the Montreal Expos' first franchise game against the Mets in April 1969.

Sutherland's rookie season with the Phillies: he opened the year in left field, then moved to shortstop for 66 games behind regular Bobby Wine, hitting .247 in 231 at-bats. Card #587 is a high-number Rookie Stars issue from the seventh print series, shared with Don Shaw and picturing him with the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies; it is recognized as his rookie card. A slick-fielding second baseman known for turning the double play, Gary Sutherland spent 13 seasons with seven clubs and was the Montreal Expos' first starting second baseman in 1969.
