About this card

The story on this card
This third-series combination card pairs two Pittsburgh Pirates sluggers, Willie Stargell and Donn Clendenon. Stargell was coming off a big 1966 (.315, 33 home runs) but reported to spring training overweight; the Pirates put him on a diet, and both his average and power dropped in 1967, to .271 with 20 home runs, as he split time between the outfield and first base. Clendenon, the Pirates' regular first baseman, followed back-to-back 96- and 98-RBI seasons with a quieter .249, 13-homer 1967. The two were teammates on a Pittsburgh lineup built around power hitting alongside Roberto Clemente, a group that would later be nicknamed the Lumber Company, though that name was not yet in use in 1967. Card number 266 puts their photos on one panel rather than giving either man his own card in this print series.
Willie Stargell was Pittsburgh's power-hitting left fielder and first baseman, a seven-time All-Star known as "Pops" who won two World Series with the Pirates and, at age 39, took the 1979 National League MVP, NLCS MVP and World Series MVP awards. Donn Clendenon was Pittsburgh's power-hitting first baseman through the 1960s, a 28-homer man in 1966 who, after refusing a trade to Houston, landed with the Miracle Mets and hit three home runs to win the 1969 World Series MVP award.
