1967 Topps #84 Tommie Sisk

About Tommie Sisk
Card #84 is a first-series card, out in the earliest packs of 1967 and about as easy to find as a Sisk card gets. The 1966 line on the back is the year he stopped being a bullpen arm: 23 starts among 34 appearances, 10-5 with a 4.14 ERA over 150 innings and 60 strikeouts. That .667 winning percentage ranked sixth in the National League, and the ten wins were the first double-digit total of his career. He completed four of those starts and threw a shutout -- more complete games than he had managed in his first four seasons combined.
Tommie Wayne Sisk, born April 12, 1942, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, was a 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander out of Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California, who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1960. He was in the majors by July 19, 1962, still 20 years old, and the debut was a rough one: he started against the New York Mets and was gone after 1 1/3 innings, charged with three runs on two hits and three walks. He stuck anyway, working out of the Pittsburgh bullpen and then the rotation for seven seasons before one-year stops with San Diego and the Chicago White Sox, who acquired him for Jerry Nyman on March 30, 1970. Across 316 games and 99 starts he went 40-49 with a 3.92 ERA, 19 complete games, four shutouts, 10 saves and 441 strikeouts in 928 1/3 innings. He was no help at the plate, hitting .094 with a single extra-base hit in 235 career at-bats, and he pitched his last big league game on June 14, 1970.
