The story on this card
Traded from St. Louis to the White Sox that December, Williams returned to the majors in 1967 and hit .240 in a pitching-dominated season, playing mostly outfield for a Chicago club that stayed in the pennant race into September before fading to fourth. Card #598 is a high number from the final series and a recognized rookie card, shared with fellow White Sox outfielder Ed Stroud under the Rookie Stars banner. A hustling outfielder known for diving stops and a batting title at Tulsa, he became a Chicago White Sox fan favorite and hit a career-high .304 in 1969.
Stroud split 1967 between the White Sox and Senators, playing 107 games and hitting .212 with 42 runs scored as a rookie outfielder. His first Topps card, #598, is a shared Rookie Stars issue with the Chicago White Sox, pairing him with fellow outfielder Walt Williams. Edwin "Ed" Stroud was a speedy White Sox and Senators outfielder nicknamed "The Streak" for his base-stealing; his top year came in 1970 with Washington, batting .266 with 29 steals over a six-season career from 1966 to 1971.
