About this card

This is one of the four combo cards in the 1969 Topps set - #532 Bird Hill Aces, #539 Ted Shows How, #556 A's Stars and #572 Giants Heroes - each grouping men from one club under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Topps titled card 532 "Bird Hill Aces" for four Baltimore Orioles starters who anchored the staff behind the club's run to a 109-win season and the AL pennant. Tom Phoebus, Jim Hardin, Dave McNally and Mike Cuellar all represent Baltimore on the card. Phoebus was coming off two straight double-figure win seasons, including a career-best 15 in 1968. Hardin won 18 games in 1968 before a shoulder problem that began late that season sapped his effectiveness. McNally opened 1969 with fifteen straight wins to open the year and made his first All-Star team. Cuellar, newly arrived from Houston, went on to share the AL Cy Young Award that season. The card is part of Topps' sixth series for the set.

Tom Phoebus - Baltimore-born right-hander who opened his September 1966 Orioles debut with two straight shutouts, then anchored the rotation for three seasons through the 1970 championship season. Jim Hardin - Right-handed Orioles pitcher who won 43 games from 1967-1972, also appearing for the Yankees and Braves; a 1970 World Series champion who later worked at Xerox before dying in a 1991 plane crash in Key West. Dave McNally was Baltimore's durable left-hander, a three-time All-Star who won 20 games in four straight seasons from 1968 through 1971, shut out the Dodgers to clinch the 1966 World Series, and lent his name to the 1975 ruling that broke the reserve clause. Mike Cuellar - Cuban left-hander who battled through six minor-league seasons before a screwball turned his career around, then anchored Baltimore's rotation, sharing the 1969 Cy Young Award and winning a World Series ring in 1970.
