About Bob Skinner
Card #369 is a fourth-series number, and it is the only one here that lists Skinner as a manager rather than a player. Philadelphia hired him off its Pacific Coast League club on June 16, 1968, replacing the fired Gene Mauch, and he went 48-59 the rest of that year. The 1969 club never got going. Dick Allen skipped a doubleheader in June and drew a 26-game suspension; Skinner, at 44-64 and convinced the front office would not back his discipline, resigned on August 6 rather than manage on those terms.
Bob Skinner was a 6-foot-4 left-handed hitter who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates out of San Diego Junior College in 1951, then lost two years to the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He debuted in 1954 as a first baseman, spent 1955 back in the minors, and moved to the outfield for good in 1957, when new manager Danny Murtaugh told him he was playing left field until he played his way out of it. He never did. Skinner hit .321 in 1958 and was picked for the All-Star Game in two seasons, starting both of the two games played in 1960. He was the regular left fielder on Pittsburgh's 1960 world champions, hit over .300 three times as a Pirate, and for more than seven years patrolled Forbes Field alongside Roberto Clemente and Bill Virdon. Traded to Cincinnati in 1963 and to St. Louis in 1964, he won a second ring off the Cardinals' bench. Twelve seasons left him at .277 with 1,198 hits and 103 home runs. He later managed the Phillies, coached four organizations including the 1979 champion Pirates, and joined San Diego's Breitbard Hall of Fame in 1976. He died in 2026 at 94.
