About Juan Marichal

Three cards out of the Year of the Pitcher. Card #10 is a first-series National League pitching leaders card, Marichal's 26 wins listed above Bob Gibson and Fergie Jenkins. Card #370 carries the 1968 season itself, his masterpiece: 26-9 with a 2.43 ERA and league highs in wins, complete games with 30, and innings pitched with more than 325, plus a fifth-place finish in the MVP vote behind Gibson, Pete Rose, Willie McCovey and Curt Flood. Those 26 wins are still the San Francisco record. Card #572 is Giants Heroes, a two-player card pairing him with McCovey, the two men who carried a Giants club that finished second to St. Louis.

Juan Marichal, the Dominican Dandy, pitched sixteen major league seasons from 1960 to 1975, all but the last two for the San Francisco Giants. Born October 20, 1937 in the village of Laguna Verde, he learned the game from an older brother using golf balls sewn inside cloth and bats cut from tree branches. Across the 1960s he won 191 games, more than any pitcher in baseball and 27 clear of runner-up Bob Gibson. He won twenty or more six times, every one of those years carrying an ERA under 2.50 and better than 200 strikeouts, and he led the National League in wins twice, complete games twice, shutouts twice and ERA once. He was named to nine All-Star teams and was Most Valuable Player of the 1965 game, leaving eight All-Star appearances with a 0.50 ERA. On August 22, 1965 he struck Dodgers catcher John Roseboro with his bat during a Candlestick Park brawl, drawing a suspension and a then-record National League fine; the two later became close friends, and Roseboro's public forgiveness helped carry him to Cooperstown on the third ballot. He retired with 243 wins, 244 complete games, 2,303 strikeouts and a 2.89 ERA, never winning a Cy Young Award, and in 1983 became the first Dominican-born player elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
