1969 Topps #657 Bobby Murcer

About Bobby Murcer
Back from the Army and moved off shortstop, Murcer won the Yankees' third base job that spring before shifting to the outfield, ultimately settling into center field. He hit .259 with 26 home runs and 82 RBIs across 152 games, establishing himself as a regular. This solo card is a high number from Topps' seventh series.
Bobby Murcer was an Oklahoma City outfielder who spent seventeen seasons in the majors, almost all of them as a Yankee. Signed by scout Tom Greenwade, the same man who signed his idol Mickey Mantle, Murcer arrived as a highly touted shortstop before a two-year Army hitch delayed his rise. Once he returned he settled into center field and became the club's best hitter of the early 1970s, batting .331 in 1971 and topping the American League in runs and total bases in 1972, a season that also brought him a Gold Glove. He made five straight All-Star teams. Traded to the San Francisco Giants after the 1974 season, he later played for the Chicago Cubs before a 1979 trade returned him to New York, where he finished his playing career and went on to a long run as a Yankees broadcaster.
