The story on this card
Closter appears on 1969 Topps #114, a Rookie Stars card from the set's second series paired with Yankees pitcher John Cumberland, whose rookie card it is. Issued during Closter's stretch in the Yankees organization between his 1966 debut and his 1971 return to the majors, the card reflects a season spent entirely in the minor leagues, primarily with the Yankees' Triple-A Syracuse affiliate, rather than the big leagues. Al Closter, a left-handed pitcher from Nebraska, spent four big-league seasons with the Senators, Yankees and Braves between 1966 and 1973, after representing the United States at the 1964 Olympics while at Iowa State.
In 1969 Cumberland pitched two games in relief for the Yankees, his second big-league season after debuting in 1968. Topps pictured him on card #114, a Rookie Stars issue from the set's second print series shared with fellow Yankees prospect Alan Closter, and the card stands as his recognized rookie card. Left-handed pitcher from Westbrook, Maine who spent six big-league seasons with the Yankees, Giants, Cardinals and Angels, highlighted by a 9-6, 2.92 ERA year for the 1971 NL West champion Giants and an NLCS start against Pittsburgh.
