1969 Topps #262 Mike Kekich

About Mike Kekich
Card #262 shows Kekich in New York flannel in his first year with the Yankees. It is a third-series card, an ordinary middle number. The 1969 season behind it was a working one: 28 appearances, 13 of them starts, 105 innings, a 4-6 record and a 4.54 ERA, with one complete game and one save. It opened a stay in New York that ran through the middle of the 1973 season.
Mike Kekich was a left-handed pitcher who worked parts of nine major league seasons between 1965 and 1977. Born Michael Dennis Kekich in San Diego on April 2, 1945, he came up with the Los Angeles Dodgers and debuted on June 9, 1965, at twenty years old. He pitched five games that summer, did not reach the majors again until 1968, and then spent that season in the Dodgers rotation, starting twenty of his twenty-five games and throwing a shutout. New York had him from 1969 on, and the Yankees were his club into the middle of 1973. His two best years came in 1971 and 1972, when he went 10-9 and 10-13 and logged 170.1 and 175.1 innings. He finished 1973 with the Cleveland Indians, pitched in Japan for the Nippon-Ham Fighters in 1974, resurfaced with the Texas Rangers in 1975, and closed out in relief for the expansion Seattle Mariners in 1977. The career line reads 39-51 with a 4.59 ERA, 497 strikeouts and 860.2 innings over 235 games. Away from the mound he is best remembered for trading families with Yankees teammate Fritz Peterson before the 1973 season. He tried a comeback in the Mexican League in 1979 and 1980, then left organized baseball.
