1969 Topps #354 Nate Oliver

About Nate Oliver
Topps #354 is a fourth-series card, a mid-set number. It is the only card of the decade that lists Oliver with the New York Yankees, which makes it a curiosity: New York got him from San Francisco for Charley Smith in December 1968, used him for a single pinch-hit ground out on April 10, 1969, then shipped him to the Chicago Cubs nine days later for Lee Elia. The back belongs to his Giants year, .178 in 36 games and cut short by a late-June injury. With Chicago he mostly pinch-ran, but on May 13, 1969 he reached base four times against San Diego and hit the second and last home run of his career.
Nathaniel Oliver (December 13, 1940 - April 5, 2025) was a right-handed infielder from St. Petersburg, Florida who spent parts of seven major league seasons in the 1960s, mostly with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers signed him out of Gibbs High School on June 10, 1959; he hit .329 at Great Falls in 1960, reached Triple-A Spokane in 1961 and moved to second base there in 1962, a sensible switch with Maury Wills locked in at shortstop. Oliver reached the majors in 1963 and stayed with the club through 1967, shuttling between Los Angeles and Spokane most years. He went to the San Francisco Giants in February 1968, to the New York Yankees that December and to the Chicago Cubs the following April, then retired after two more minor league seasons in 1971. He hit .226 with 2 home runs and 45 RBI in 410 games, 291 of them at second base. Oliver worked for Bank of America and the Bay Area Rapid Transit system before returning to the game in 1988, managing and coaching in the minors for the Angels and Cubs into the 2000s. The son of Negro leagues player Jim Oliver Sr., he was also a singer, asked to perform the national anthem at a 1990 Dodgers old-timers game after Ella Fitzgerald cancelled.
