1969 Topps #353 Jeff Torborg

About Jeff Torborg
Torborg caught 50 games as the Dodgers' backup catcher in 1969, more than he had the year before, in a season sandwiched between Tom Haller's arrival as the starter and Torborg's own no-hitter behind Bill Singer the following July. His 1969 Topps card, #353, comes from the fourth print series.
Jeff Torborg was a catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels from 1964 to 1973, prized for handling a pitching staff rather than for his bat. A Rutgers All-American who hit .537 in his final college season, he signed with the Dodgers in 1963 and spent most of his career as a backup, not becoming a full-time starter until his last season in Anaheim. Despite the limited playing time, Torborg caught three no-hitters for three different pitchers: Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game, Bill Singer's 1970 no-hitter, and the first of Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters in 1973, making him one of a handful of catchers to catch a no-hitter in each league. He finished his playing days with a .214 average, 8 home runs and 101 RBI over ten seasons. Torborg went on to a long second career as a manager, coach and broadcaster, leading the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins, and won American League Manager of the Year with the White Sox in 1990.
