1969 Topps #583 Clyde Wright

About Clyde Wright
In 1969 Wright pitched mostly in relief for the Angels, making just five starts among 37 appearances and finishing 1-8 with a 4.10 ERA as California struggled near the bottom of the American League. It was the low point of his career, and afterward the club considered trading him but found no takers. This 1969 Topps card, #583, part of the sixth print series, is a recognized rookie card and pictures him with the California Angels.
Clyde Wright was a left-handed pitcher who spent ten major league seasons with the California Angels (1966-73), Milwaukee Brewers (1974) and Texas Rangers (1975). A Tennessee farm boy who starred at Carson-Newman College, he was selected by the Angels in the sixth round of the 1965 draft and reached the majors the following June, beating the Twins on a four-hitter in his debut. After a rough 1969, he learned a screwball while playing winter ball in Puerto Rico under Jim Fregosi and returned in 1970 to post the best season by an Angels left-hander, winning 22 games, throwing a no-hitter against Oakland, and earning his only All-Star selection. He later pitched three seasons for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan, where teammate Sadaharu Oh and manager Shigeo Nagashima were part of his story. He is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame from his college pitching career.
