About Earl Weaver

Card #516 in 1969 Topps comes from the sixth series, and it is not Weaver's rookie card. It is his only card of the decade, showing the Baltimore Orioles manager in his first full season on the job after replacing Hank Bauer in July 1968. That club won the new American League East at 109-53 and swept the Twins in the first ALCS before losing the World Series to the Miracle Mets in five games.

Earl Weaver managed the Baltimore Orioles from July 1968 through 1982 and again in 1985-1986, going 1,480-1,060 (.583) without ever playing in the majors; his playing career was spent as a minor-league second baseman from 1948 to 1960. After two winning seasons managing Triple-A Rochester, he joined the Orioles as first-base coach and replaced Hank Bauer as manager on July 11, 1968. His formula was pitching and three-run homers, with Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar and Dave McNally on the mound and Frank Robinson, Boog Powell and Brooks Robinson in the lineup. Weaver won three straight American League pennants (1969-1971), the 1970 World Series over Cincinnati and a fourth pennant in 1979, and the Associated Press named him Manager of the Year three times. Remembered as the Earl of Baltimore, he battled umpires relentlessly, piling up 94 ejections. The Veterans Committee elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996, and he died at sea in the Caribbean on January 19, 2013.
