1969 Topps #477 Jeff James

About Jeff James
Jeff James's 1969 Topps card, #477, is a recognized rookie card issued in the set's fifth print series and shows him with the Philadelphia Phillies. It caught him in his final big-league season: after a 1968 rookie year that included a complete-game shutout over the Chicago Cubs, James appeared in just six more games for Philadelphia in 1969, going 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA before his brief major league career came to a close.
Jeff James was a right-handed pitcher from Indianapolis, Indiana who reached the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1968. A graduate of Indianapolis Washington High School, where he was later named to the school's all-time baseball team, James went on to letter in baseball at Indiana State University. He debuted for Philadelphia on April 13, 1968, and worked mostly as a starter that first season, going 4-4 with a 4.27 ERA across 29 games, including a shutout against the Chicago Cubs on July 17, 1968. He returned for a shorter stint in 1969, his final major league season, closing out his two-year career with a 6-6 record over 35 games. James died in his hometown of Indianapolis in 2006.
