On this card: Ken Brett, Gerry Moses

About this card
This is one of the 52 Rookie Stars cards in the 1969 Topps set, each carrying two or three young players under a club or league title. A Rookie Stars card is a rookie card only for the players pictured who had no earlier Topps flagship card - the rookie-card answer on each card names them.
The story on this card
Brett opened 1969 with the Red Sox but struggled through three early starts and was sent down to Triple-A Louisville, not returning until rosters expanded in September; his line that year was 2-3 with a 5.26 ERA over 39.1 innings. On September 24 at Fenway he carried a shutout into extra innings against the Yankees. 1969 Topps #476, from the fifth print series, pairs him with fellow Red Sox prospect Gerry Moses on a multi-player Rookie Stars card; it exists in two collectible states distinguished by the color of the printed names, yellow (476a) and white (476b), and is a recognised rookie card. A journeyman lefty for ten clubs over fourteen seasons, best remembered as the youngest pitcher ever in a World Series and as one of the finest hitting pitchers of his era.
Moses was in the majors to stay in 1969, hitting .304 with four home runs and 17 RBIs in 53 games, starting 32 of them behind the plate and splitting the work with Russ Gibson and Tom Satriano. His father Sammy, a scout for more than two decades, died in Yazoo City that May. Jim Lonborg said Moses had very good hands and a very good arm and gave a great target. The card is a Red Sox Rookie Stars panel from the fifth series. Collectors count it as a rookie card for Ken Brett, who shares it and had come up through Pittsfield with him; Moses already had his own four years earlier. It was printed two ways, with the players' names in yellow or in white. A Mississippi bonus baby who passed up a football scholarship to catch for the Red Sox, Moses hit .304 in 1969, made the 1970 All-Star team, and then moved through six more clubs before finishing in 1975.
