1969 Topps #587 Joe Rudi

About Joe Rudi
Rudi split 1969 between Oakland and Triple-A Iowa, hitting .395 for Iowa before a June recall to the majors gave way to a midseason benching and a brief return to the minors, then a call-up for good in September. His card, #587, comes from Topps' sixth series for the year and is his rookie card, the first time he appeared on a Topps card, showing him with the Oakland Athletics.
Joe Rudi was a left fielder who spent most of his sixteen-year career with the Oakland Athletics, becoming a core piece of the club's three straight World Series championships from 1972 through 1974. A three-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner, he led the American League in hits in 1972 and in total bases in 1974, finishing runner-up for AL MVP both years. His signature moment came in Game 2 of the 1972 World Series, when he raced to the left-field wall at Riverfront Stadium and made a leaping, backhanded catch to rob Denis Menke and preserve an Oakland win; he also homered in that game. Rudi went 21-for-70 for a .300 average across three World Series with the A's. After Oakland, he played four seasons for the California Angels, briefly joined the Boston Red Sox in 1981, and finished his career back with the A's in 1982. Career totals: a .264 average with 179 home runs and 810 RBI over 1,547 games. He was signed out of Modesto, California, and later inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.
