1969 Topps #541 Joe Verbanic

About Joe Verbanic
An undiagnosed rotator cuff problem kept Verbanic out of the majors for all of 1969 despite visits to specialists and the Mayo Clinic; he pitched briefly in the Florida Instructional League that fall while rehabbing. This card, #541, reports his 1968 Yankees numbers, the last full season behind the statistics printed on its back, as he worked to return for 1970.
Joe Verbanic was a right-handed pitcher from Washington, Pennsylvania, who signed with the Phillies out of Hopewell High School in 1961 and climbed steadily through their farm system, reaching Triple-A by 1965. He debuted with Philadelphia in July 1966, then was traded to the Yankees that December for veteran Pedro Ramos. Inserted into New York's rotation in 1967, he won his first two starts, including a complete-game shutout of Washington, and finished 4-3 with a 2.80 ERA. He worked a career-high 40 games in 1968, throwing another shutout against the White Sox, but a rotator cuff injury wiped out his entire 1969 season. He returned briefly in 1970 before arm trouble ended his major league career. Verbanic later managed in the minors and settled in Eugene, Oregon, running a fire-protection business for decades.
