About Mike Hershberger

Card 655 sits deep in the seventh series of 1969 Topps, a high number. It closes out his time with the Oakland Athletics. He appeared in only 51 games in 1969, starting 32 of them in the outfield and pinch-hitting 17 times, and batted .202 with 26 hits. The following January the Athletics traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers with Phil Roof, Lew Krausse and Ken Sanders for Don Mincher and Ron Clark, ending a five-season run with a franchise he had joined back in Kansas City.

Norman Michael Hershberger, born October 9, 1939, in Massillon, Ohio, played eleven major-league seasons as a right-handed outfielder for the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics and the Milwaukee Brewers, closing out his career with a second stint in Chicago in 1971. He graduated from Massillon Washington High School, where he was a Tiger football halfback, and took a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati before signing with the White Sox in 1959. He reached the majors on September 5, 1961, and was known above all for his defense and for one of the strongest, most accurate outfield arms of his era. He held a starting corner outfield job for seven straight years, 1962 through 1968, split between Chicago and the Athletics. Over 1,150 games he batted .252 with 900 hits, 150 doubles, 22 triples, 26 home runs and 344 runs batted in, striking out only 311 times in 3,572 at-bats. Massillon named him a Distinguished Citizen in 2021. He died in his hometown on July 1, 2012, at 72.
