The story on this card
Card #576 in the 1969 Topps set's sixth series groups Stone with Bill Wilson under the Phillies Rookie Stars banner, part of the regular print run. It arrives just after Philadelphia acquired him from Baltimore that January in exchange for catcher Clay Dalrymple. Stone opened the season as the Phillies' starting left fielder on Opening Day and went on to appear in 103 games, hitting .239 in his first full big-league season. A left-handed outfielder from Corning, California, Ron Stone reached the majors in 1966 with Kansas City after a Rule 5 selection, then spent three seasons as Philadelphia's dependable fourth outfielder, valued for speed, defense and a strong arm.
1969 was Wilson's rookie major league season: after seven years in the minors he made the Phillies' Opening Day roster and worked exclusively out of the bullpen, appearing in 37 games. Topps pictured him on card #576, a Rookie Stars card from the set's sixth series shared with fellow Phillies prospect Ron Stone. Wilson is not enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. A Marshall University product who spent seven minor league seasons in the Phillies system before sticking as a Philadelphia relief pitcher from 1969 through 1973.
