1969 Topps #577 Mike Hegan

About Mike Hegan
Hegan was the first player signed by the expansion Seattle Pilots and delivered the new franchise's first home run in its first game, connecting off California's Jim McGlothlin on Opening Day. He hit .292 with 8 home runs and 37 RBI over 95 games and was voted to the 1969 All-Star Game, though a hamstring injury forced him to withdraw in favor of teammate Don Mincher. His 1969 Topps card, #577 from print series six, shows him with the Pilots.
Mike Hegan was a left-handed first baseman and outfielder who played twelve major league seasons between 1964 and 1977, all in the American League. The son of longtime Cleveland catcher Jim Hegan, he signed with the New York Yankees in 1961 out of College of the Holy Cross and reached the majors in September 1964, joining that fall's World Series roster as a replacement for the injured Tony Kubek. After parts of three seasons with the Yankees, he was sold to the expansion Seattle Pilots in 1968 and became the new franchise's first player and first home run hitter, earning a 1969 All-Star selection before an injury forced him to withdraw. He moved with the franchise to Milwaukee as the Brewers began play in 1970, and later played for the Oakland Athletics, winning a World Series ring with the club in 1972, before finishing his career back with the Brewers in 1977. Over 966 games he batted .242 with 53 home runs. He was not elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
