1969 Topps #618 Ramon Webster

About Ramon Webster
1969 Topps #618, a high number from the set's seventh print series, shows Webster with the Oakland Athletics. That year his playing time shrank further to 64 games, though he hit .260 with one home run and 13 RBI in limited at-bats as a reserve first baseman.
Ramon Alberto Webster, a native of Colon, Panama, played five major league seasons as a left-handed first baseman for the Athletics, San Diego Padres, and Chicago Cubs. He broke in with a strong rookie campaign, batting .256 with 11 home runs and 51 RBI in 122 games, beating out Ken Harrelson for the starting first base job. In 1968 he settled into the middle of an Oakland lineup that included Bert Campaneris, Reggie Jackson, and Sal Bando, but a leg injury in early May cut into his playing time and he never fully recovered his rookie form. His final big league season came in 1971, split between the Padres, Athletics, and Cubs as a left-handed pinch hitter. Across 380 career games he hit .244 with 190 hits, 17 home runs, 98 RBI, and nine stolen bases. After his playing days ended, Webster managed the Panama national team at the 1981 Bolivarian Games in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, where Panama shared the gold medal with Venezuela.
