About Reggie Smith

Smith's breakout year: at age 24 he hit .309 with 25 home runs and a career-high on-base plus slugging mark to that point, one of his finest all-around defensive seasons in center field for Boston. His 1969 Topps card, #660, is a high number from the set's seventh series, issued as the switch-hitter established himself among the American League's elite outfielders.

Carl Reginald Smith, born April 2, 1945 in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in Los Angeles, was a switch-hitting outfielder who spent 17 major league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants from 1966 to 1982. He hit .287 with 2,020 hits, 314 home runs and 1,092 RBI, drew seven All-Star selections, and won a Gold Glove in the outfield. A five-tool talent with one of the strongest throwing arms of his era, Smith reached the World Series four times, hitting three home runs in the 1977 Fall Classic for the Dodgers. He broke into the majors in 1966 after leading the International League in batting for the Toronto Maple Leafs, then endured a difficult racial climate in Boston before finding a more comfortable fit in St. Louis alongside Bob Gibson and Lou Brock. After his playing days he coached for the Dodgers and USA Baseball, including Olympic teams.
