1969 Topps #348 Steve Hargan

About Steve Hargan
Card number 348, print series 4, reflects a difficult 1968 for Cleveland in which elbow tendinitis derailed Hargan's season, dropping him to the bullpen by midsummer and to an 8-15 record. He entered 1969 trying to recover the form of his 1966 breakout and his lone 1967 All-Star season, but the elbow trouble persisted, and he finished 1969 at 5-14 with a 5.70 ERA over 32 games for Cleveland.
Steve Hargan was a hard-throwing right-hander from Fort Wayne, Indiana, who signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1961 after a tryout at Municipal Stadium and worked his way up through five minor league stops, sharpening a slider under instruction from Hal Newhouser along the way. He debuted with Cleveland in August 1965 and settled into the rotation the following year. His best stretch came in 1967, when he opened the season with back-to-back shutouts, made his only All-Star team, and led the American League with six shutouts despite pitching through tendinitis. Arm trouble, including an ankle fracture and later carpal tunnel syndrome, shadowed the rest of his career. He remained with Cleveland through 1972, sat out the 1973 season, then pitched for the Texas Rangers from 1974 to 1977 before finishing that final year with brief stops in Toronto and Atlanta.
