About Wes Parker

Issued in Topps' fifth series, Parker's 1969 card arrived in a season in which he entered spring training determined to fix his hitting weaknesses and, working with hitting coach Dixie Walker, boosted his batting average nearly 40 points to .278 with 68 RBI despite missing 20 games after an appendectomy. He earned his third consecutive Gold Glove at first base. The card exists in two printing states distinguished by the color of the player's last name on the card front.

Wes Parker played nine seasons at first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers, from his 1964 debut through 1972. A switch-hitter out of Brentwood, California and USC, he built a reputation as one of the smoothest-fielding first basemen of his era, winning six consecutive National League Gold Glove Awards from 1967 through 1972 and the 1972 Lou Gehrig Memorial Award. His signature season came in 1970, when he hit .319, drove in 111 runs while hitting only 10 home runs, and hit for the cycle against the New York Mets. Parker appeared in the 1965 and 1966 World Series, helping the Dodgers beat the Minnesota Twins in seven games in 1965 before losing to the Baltimore Orioles in 1966. He finished his career with a .267 average, 64 home runs and 470 RBI over 1,288 games. After retiring following the 1972 season, Parker played a year in Japan for the Nankai Hawks, winning that league's top defensive award as well. He is not a Hall of Fame inductee.
