About this card
This is one of the 52 Rookie Stars cards in the 1969 Topps set, each carrying two or three young players under a club or league title. A Rookie Stars card is a rookie card only for the players pictured who had no earlier Topps flagship card - the rookie-card answer on each card names them.
The story on this card
After a season back in the minors in 1968, Herrmann rejoined the White Sox in 1969 and took over as their starting catcher, replacing Duane Josephson, hitting .231 with 8 home runs in 102 games. His 1969 Topps card is a Rookie Stars subset issue shared with Dan Lazar, both pictured as Chicago White Sox prospects. It is a recognized rookie card for Herrmann. A knuckleball specialist behind the plate, Herrmann caught Hoyt Wilhelm, Wilbur Wood and Eddie Fisher for a decade with the White Sox and made the 1974 All-Star team.
1969 Topps #439 is a Rookie Stars card from the set's fifth series, pairing Dan Lazar with fellow White Sox rookie Ed Herrmann under the shared Chicago White Sox banner. Lazar's featured season came out of the White Sox bullpen and rotation, appearing in nine games with three starts and posting a 6.53 ERA over 20.2 innings with nine strikeouts; it proved to be the final year of his brief big-league career. Left-handed pitcher John Daniel Lazar spent 1968-1969 with the Chicago White Sox after a record-setting run at Indiana State, later joining that school's athletics Hall of Fame.
