About Gary Waslewski

Card #438 in Topps' fifth series pictures Waslewski with the St. Louis Cardinals, the club that acquired him from Boston in a December 1968 trade for Ducky Schofield. It is a regular series-five card. His stay in St. Louis was brief: partway through the 1969 season he was dealt again, this time to the expansion Montreal Expos for pitcher Mudcat Grant. It is his rookie card in the set.

Gary Waslewski was a right-handed pitcher from Meriden, Connecticut who reached the majors with the Boston Red Sox in 1967 after starring at Berlin High School and the University of Connecticut before signing with the Pirates organization. Just four months into his big-league career, with only a 2-2 record and no complete games to his name, he was tabbed to start Game Six of the 1967 World Series against St. Louis. He pitched for six major-league seasons, 1967 through 1972, working out of the Boston bullpen and rotation before a trade sent him to the Cardinals, then the Expos and the Yankees, before he signed on with the Athletics as a free agent in 1972. Waslewski also shared the American League lead among pitchers with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 1968. He finished his career with an 11-26 record, a 3.44 ERA and 5 saves across 152 games. Away from the mound he also pitched winter ball in Venezuela, once throwing 16 innings in a single outing.
