The story on this card
Card #162 is part of the 1969 Topps World Series subset, from print series 2, and commemorates Game 1 of the 1968 Fall Classic between the Cardinals and Tigers at Busch Stadium, fronted by Cardinals ace Bob Gibson. Facing Tigers 31-game winner Denny McLain in a matchup of the league's top arms, Gibson threw a complete-game shutout on five hits, striking out a World Series-record 17 batters to break Sandy Koufax's mark of 15 set in 1963. St. Louis backed him with a three-run fourth inning off McLain and a Lou Brock home run in the seventh for a 4-0 win, giving the defending champion Cardinals a 1-0 series lead over the Tigers. Gibson closed it out by fanning his 15th, 16th, and 17th Tigers in the ninth, a strikeout mark that still stands as the World Series record.
