The story on this card
Card 165 in Topps' 1969 World Series subset (print series 2) recalls Game 4 of the 1968 Fall Classic, when Lou Brock opened the scoring by leading off the game with a home run off Denny McLain. Mike Shannon drove in a run later in the first inning, and the Cardinals piled on two more in the third on Tim McCarver's triple and Shannon's double, chasing McLain from the mound after a rain delay. Bob Gibson backed his own cause with a fourth-inning homer, and St. Louis kept pouring it on: Brock tripled and scored, then in the eighth he fell a single short of the cycle with a bases-clearing double as the Cardinals routed Detroit to take a three-games-to-one Series lead. The front pictures Brock, the Cardinals' left fielder and leadoff man.
