The story on this card
Card #519, from Topps' sixth print series, is a Rookie Stars issue shared with Len Boehmer, and it is Kenney's rookie card. It captures him entering his first full season, having missed nearly all of 1968 to military service. He opened 1969 as the Yankees' starting center fielder, a move the press framed as filling the void left by Mickey Mantle's retirement that spring, before a slow start at the plate saw him shifted to third base by mid-season. A former Yankees infielder and outfielder whose steady glove and speed briefly had him pegged, in 1969, as center field's answer to the retiring Mickey Mantle.
Boehmer made the Yankees' roster for the full 1969 season after batting .268 at Triple-A Syracuse the year before, appearing in 45 games and playing 21 of them at first base and eight more at third base. His first major league hit came in the team's 70th game, a 10th-inning single off Garry Roggenburk at Fenway Park that drove in the go-ahead run against Boston. He finished the year hitting .176 in 108 at bats with four doubles among his 19 hits. His 1969 Topps #519 card is a recognised rookie card, a Yankees Rookie Stars issue from the set's sixth print series shared with fellow infielder Gerry Kenney; it is a regular-series card. A Flint Hill, Missouri native who signed with Cincinnati out of St. Louis University, worked seven years through the Reds' farm system, then played infield for the Yankees.
