About Adolfo Phillips

Phillips made his last start of 1969 for Montreal on August 22. Doctors suspected an ulcer, and in September he underwent stomach surgery. Before the season ended he visited Wrigley Field and shook Leo Durocher's hand, which he had refused to do when he left the Cubs. His #666 is a high-number card in the seventh series of the 1970 Topps set; one printing of the checklist card, #588, spells his first name Adolpho, and the corrected printing reads Adolfo.

Adolfo Phillips, a Panamanian center fielder from Bethania, signed with the Phillies in 1960 and rose quickly through the minors, batting .330 with 33 home runs in the Pioneer League in 1962. He debuted with Philadelphia in September 1964, then was traded to the Chicago Cubs in April 1966 in a deal that also sent Ferguson Jenkins to Chicago. Manager Leo Durocher praised his talent and installed him as an everyday center fielder, and Phillips rewarded him with his finest season in 1967, setting a National League record with 29 intentional walks. Durocher and Phillips clashed repeatedly over hustle and mental errors, and the relationship soured before Phillips was traded to the expansion Montreal Expos in June 1969. He finished his career with Cleveland in 1972, then continued playing in the Mexican League through the mid-1970s. Over parts of eight seasons he hit .247 with 59 home runs. He drove in 173 runs and stole 82 bases.
