The story on this card
Campisi made the Cardinals out of spring training in 1970 after a strong winter in the Dominican League with Licey. He pitched in 37 games, finishing 15 of them, with a 2.92 ERA, but walked 37 batters, 11 of them intentionally, against 26 strikeouts. A bad back sent him to Tulsa in August. His card, #716, is a Rookie Stars triple from the high-number seventh series, printed with Cardinals teammates Reggie Cleveland and Santiago Guzman; it is the rookie card for all three. Sal Campisi, a Brooklyn-born right-handed reliever, pitched 50 games for the Cardinals and Twins from 1969 to 1971, finishing 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA and four saves after winning the 1969 Allie Reynolds Award at Triple-A Tulsa.
Cleveland had thrown four innings in one game for the 1969 Cardinals, then stayed in the majors from August 1970. That year he went 0-4 with a 7.62 ERA over 16 games and 26 innings, striking out 22. His first Topps card is #716, a Rookie Stars card in the seventh series, a high number, shared with Sal Campisi and Santiago Guzman. All three are shown with the Cardinals and all three are rookie cards. Reggie Cleveland, a Saskatchewan-born right-hander, pitched 13 seasons for the Cardinals, Red Sox, Rangers and Brewers, winning 105 games. He was the 1971 Sporting News NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year and a member of the 1975 Red Sox pennant team.
Guzman made the Cardinals out of spring training and pitched seven early-season games. On May 19, in his second major-league start, he went the distance in a five-hit, 12-3 win over the Houston Astros, his only major-league victory. Most of the summer went to Triple-A Tulsa before one more September appearance. His 1970 Topps card is #716, a high-number Rookie Stars card shared with Sal Campisi and Reggie Cleveland, all three printed with the Cardinals, and the rookie card for each. Santiago Guzman was a Dominican right-hander from San Pedro de Macoris who pitched 12 games for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1969 to 1972. He went 16-3 with a 1.74 ERA at Class A St. Petersburg in 1967.
