About Charlie Metro
Metro opened 1970 as the Kansas City Royals' manager, taking over after Joe Gordon resigned following the club's first season. His card, #16 in the first series, shows him in that role. The tenure lasted 52 games: the Royals went 19-33 (.365), and Bob Lemon replaced him on June 7. Metro had been in the Royals' front office since 1968 and had a hand in the expansion draft.
Charlie Metro was an outfielder who played parts of three wartime seasons, 1943 to 1945, with the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Athletics, then spent decades as a minor-league manager, scout and coach, with two short stints running big-league clubs. Born Charles Moreskonich in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania, he took his professional surname from his father, Metro, a Ukrainian immigrant coal miner, and worked in the mines himself as a young man. He debuted on May 4, 1943, going 2-for-4 against the St. Louis Browns, and finished with a .193 average, three home runs and 23 RBI in 171 games, all three homers coming in 1945. He became a player-manager in the Yankees system in 1947 and was voted Pacific Coast League manager of the year in 1957 with Vancouver. His Denver Bears won the 1960 American Association pennant. In 1962 he was one of three men to serve as head coach of the Chicago Cubs under the College of Coaches plan, and his club went 43-69. He managed the Kansas City Royals briefly in 1970. Later he scouted for the Tigers and Dodgers and coached for Oakland. He died in Virginia in 2011.
