1970 Topps #266 Wally Bunker

About Wally Bunker
Bunker started Kansas City's opener on April 8, 1969, and threw the first pitch in Royals history. He went 12-11 with a 3.23 ERA over 222 2/3 innings that season. He completed 10 of his 31 starts. Card #266, in the third series, shows him with the Royals.
Wallace Edward Bunker signed with the Baltimore Orioles for a $75,000 bonus out of Capuchino High School in San Bruno, California, and reached the majors at 18. His 1964 rookie season produced a 19-5 record, a 2.69 ERA and the American League's top winning percentage at .792. It earned him The Sporting News AL Rookie Pitcher of the Year award and a place on the Topps All-Star Rookie Team. A rotator cuff injury in late September 1964 began years of arm trouble. Even so, Bunker threw a six-hit, 1-0 shutout of the Dodgers in Game 3 of Baltimore's 1966 World Series sweep, part of a Series-record 33 1/3 scoreless innings by Orioles pitching. Kansas City took him in the October 1968 expansion draft, and he led the first Royals staff in wins. His last major league season was 1971, and he retired in June 1972 at 27 with a 60-52 record and a 3.51 ERA. The San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1995.
