About Randy Hundley

Card #265, a third-series issue, shows Hundley with the Cubs. He was the first player to catch 150 games three years running, 1967 through 1969, and in 1969 he led National League catchers in assists. In 1970 a chip fracture of his left thumb kept him out of the first four games, and a collision with St. Louis's Carl Taylor on April 21 injured his left knee and cost him three months. He appeared in 73 games.

Randy Hundley caught for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins, and San Diego Padres across fourteen big-league seasons from 1964 to 1977. Signed by the Giants out of Virginia, he was traded to Chicago before the 1966 season and quickly became the Cubs' everyday catcher, setting durability records behind the plate while introducing a one-handed catching style that later catchers adopted. He won a Gold Glove in 1967 and earned an All-Star selection in 1969, the year Chicago held first place for months before fading late. Knee injuries in the early 1970s slowed him, and he finished his playing career with brief stops in Minnesota and San Diego before returning to the Cubs. He later managed in the minor leagues and founded baseball fantasy camps for adult fans.
