1970 Topps #117 Don Young

About Don Young
Young hit .239 with six home runs and 27 RBI for the 1969 Cubs and played the outfield in 100 of his games that season. The Cubs held a nine-game lead as late as August 16 and lost the pennant race to the Mets by eight games. His 1970 Topps card, #117, is in the first series and shows him with the Cubs.
Don Young was an outfielder who played two seasons in the majors, 1965 and 1969, both with the Chicago Cubs, after signing as an amateur free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1963. His major league debut came in Sandy Koufax's perfect game, where he popped out for the first putout of the contest. After 11 games in 1965, Young spent three seasons in the minors before returning to Chicago in 1969, appearing in 101 games, primarily as a center fielder, during the Cubs' pennant race with the Mets. A defensive miscue in a July 8 loss to New York drew public criticism from manager Leo Durocher and teammate Ron Santo, the latter later apologizing. Over 112 career games Young batted .218 with 7 home runs and 29 RBI. He played two more minor league seasons before leaving organized baseball.
