1970 Topps #264 Rich Hebner

About Rich Hebner
Hebner opened Three Rivers Stadium on July 16, 1970, by collecting its first base hit and scoring its first run. He finished the year at .290 with 11 home runs and 46 RBI. On September 7 he hit two homers and a double and drove in four runs in an 8-3 win over the Cubs. In the NLCS against Cincinnati he went 4-for-6 with two walks. Card #264 is a third-series issue showing him with the Pirates.
Richie Hebner spent 18 seasons in the majors, most of them at third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates teams that won five NL East titles in six years and beat Baltimore in the 1971 World Series. Born in Brighton, Massachusetts, he was a star hockey player at Norwood High School before the Pirates made him their first pick, 15th overall, in the 1966 draft. The left-handed hitter got a September look in 1968, took over third base in 1969 and hit .301, and reached a career-high 25 home runs in 1973. In the 1971 postseason he homered off future Hall of Famers Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry in the NLCS, then off Jim Palmer in the World Series. In the offseason he dug graves at the cemeteries his father supervised, which earned him the nickname "Digger." He signed with the Phillies as a free agent and moved to first base, then played for the Mets, the Tigers, the Pirates again and the Cubs, finishing in 1985 as a pinch hitter. He later spent years as a hitting coach and minor league manager.
