About Chuck Hartenstein

When Hartenstein reached spring training in 1970, Don Osborn was the pitching coach, and Hartenstein, who threw sidearm with a sinker, was asked to throw overhand instead. Pittsburgh had settled on Dave Giusti as its closer and spread the other relief work around, and by mid-June it put Hartenstein on waivers. The St. Louis Cardinals claimed him, and he left Pittsburgh on June 22 with a 1-1 record and a 4.56 ERA. Card #216, from the second series of the 1970 Topps set, pictures him with the Pirates.

Charles Oscar Hartenstein, a right-handed relief pitcher out of Seguin, Texas, starred at the University of Texas before signing with the Chicago Cubs in 1964. He reached the majors in 1965 and settled in as a Cubs reliever, posting his best season in 1967 with a 9-5 record, 3.08 ERA and 10 saves. Traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates after the 1968 season, he rebounded with a career-high workload in 1969. He also pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox in 1970 before closing his playing days with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1977. Across seven seasons he made 187 relief appearances and recorded 23 saves. His career record was 17-19 with a 4.52 ERA. After retiring he coached for the Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers and later scouted for the California Angels.
