1970 Topps #217 Ron Hansen

About Ron Hansen
Hansen was a backup with the White Sox in 1969, hitting .259 in 85 games and 185 at-bats. Card #217, from series 2, still shows him with Chicago. His 1970 season was his first with the Yankees, and he hit .297 with four home runs and 14 RBI. He played 59 games, 15 of them at shortstop and 11 at third base.
Ronald Lavern Hansen was born April 5, 1938, in Oxford, Nebraska, and moved with his family to Albany, California, at age two. He turned down a University of California scholarship and signed with the Baltimore Orioles on April 7, 1956; a ruptured disc and the spinal surgery that followed cost him the entire 1957 season. The 6-foot-3 shortstop debuted with Baltimore on April 15, 1958. In 1960 he hit .255 with 22 home runs and 86 RBIs. He led American League shortstops with 325 putouts, won the league's Rookie of the Year award and started both of that summer's All-Star Games. Traded to the Chicago White Sox in January 1963 in the deal that sent Luis Aparicio to Baltimore, he handled 28 chances in an August 1965 doubleheader, a major league record for a shortstop. Dealt to the Washington Senators in February 1968, he turned a line drive into the majors' first unassisted triple play in 41 years that July, then closed a 15-year career with the White Sox, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals, finishing at .234 with 106 home runs and 501 RBIs. He later coached in the majors, managed in the minors and scouted until he retired in 2010.
