1970 Topps #218 Ron Stone

About Ron Stone
Stone opened 1970 competing with fellow left-handed hitter Oscar Gamble for the fourth outfielder job. More playing time came in May, when left fielder John Briggs pulled a leg muscle and center fielder Larry Hisle slumped in his second season. Stone played 99 games in the outfield, stole 5 bases and scored 30 runs. His 1970 card is #218, from the second series, with the Phillies.
Harry Ronald Stone, a left-handed hitting outfielder from Corning, California, played college ball in Stockton before signing with the Baltimore Orioles organization in 1962. He advanced through the Orioles' minor-league system over the next several seasons, hitting .294 with 16 home runs at Tri-City in 1965, before Kansas City selected him in the 1965 Rule 5 draft. Stone debuted with the Athletics in 1966, then returned to Baltimore's minor-league system for two and a half more seasons. Traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for catcher Clay Dalrymple in January 1969, he spent three seasons as the club's fourth outfielder, with speed, defense and a strong throwing arm as his main assets. He played his last major-league game in 1972 and closed his career in the minors in 1973. Stone finished with a .241 average over five major-league seasons and was later inducted into the Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame.
