About Rick Joseph

Joseph pinch hit in 43 of his 71 appearances for the 1970 Phillies, and one of them, on April 28 at Dodger Stadium, was a game-winner: he ripped Alan Foster's first pitch of the 10th inning over the fence. New manager Frank Lucchesi said having a hitter like Joseph on his bench gave him peace of mind. Joseph finished at .227 with three home runs, and his last major league game came September 23. His 1970 Topps card is #186, with the Phillies.

Ricardo Emelindo Joseph Harrigan was a corner infielder from San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic. He signed with the San Francisco Giants organization in 1959 and played in their farm system through 1963, and Kansas City drafted him that December. He reached the majors with the Athletics in June 1964. After a short stint there, the Phillies picked him up and sent him to their San Diego farm club, where he was named Most Valuable Player of the Pacific Coast League in 1967. Called up that August, he hit his first major league home run on September 16, 1967, a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam off Ron Perranoski against the Dodgers. Through 2019, he was still the last major leaguer to hit a walk-off grand slam for his first career home run. He spent the next three seasons as a utility infielder and outfielder for the Phillies before finishing his pro career in the minors and Mexican League. He batted and threw right-handed and stood 6-foot-1.
