About this card

This is one of the forty Rookie Stars cards, each showing two or three rookies from one club; #654 (National League) and #702 (American League) each mix three clubs. A Rookie Stars card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #36, #74, #109, #154, #267, #317, #429, #573, #669 and #683 one of them had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Lis left Eugene for Philadelphia on September 3, 1970, after hitting a Pacific Coast League-best 36 home runs with 107 RBIs. He pinch-hit on September 5, started the next day, and two days later hit his first major league homer in a 6-3 loss to the Cardinals. Manager Frank Lucchesi gave him the ball. He batted .189 in 13 games. Card #56 is a Rookie Stars card shared with fellow Phillie Scott Reid, the rookie card for both men. First baseman Joe Lis hit 32 home runs in 356 major league games for the Phillies, Twins, Indians and Mariners between 1970 and 1977, then played a season in Japan with Kintetsu and spent decades coaching youth baseball.

Reid and Joe Lis shared Rookie Stars card #56 in the opening series of 1970, the rookie card for each man. Reid had reached the Phillies in September 1969, getting into 13 games and collecting four hits in 19 at-bats. His first plate appearance ended in a walk, and he scored in a 6-2 win over the Cubs. Scott Reid, a left-handed Phillies outfielder, played 38 games in 1969 and 1970 and hit .147. He spent more than 40 years as a scout and executive, with the Phillies, Cubs, Marlins and, from 2002 to 2020, the Detroit Tigers.
