About Dave Watkins
Watkins appears in 1970 Topps on card #168, a second-series issue that pictures him with the Philadelphia Phillies and is a rookie card. The year before, he had caught 54 games for Philadelphia and played five in the outfield. He scored 17 runs and drove in 12.
Dave Watkins was a right-handed catcher from Owensboro, Kentucky, whose major league career was a single season with the Philadelphia Phillies. The Detroit Tigers signed him in 1963, and the Phillies selected him that December in the first-year player draft. He spent the next five seasons in Philadelphia's farm system before making the 1969 roster as backup to regular catcher Mike Ryan. He played 69 games that year, 33 of them as starting catcher. He hit .176 with 26 hits and four home runs. The season was his last in baseball, closing a seven-year professional career. He took a biology degree at Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1972 and a medical degree at the University of Louisville in 1976. Based in Louisville, he practiced as a physician, served as medical director of the Prauer Rehabilitation and Neuroscience Institute, and received the Greater Louisville Medical Society's Excellence in Citizenship Award in 2009.
