1970 Topps #169 Tom Hall

About Tom Hall
Hall's #169, a second-series 1970 Topps card, shows the Twins left-hander. Of his 52 games that season, 11 were starts, and he saved four. His strikeout rate of 10.7 per nine innings topped the just-under-9.0 rate of Sam McDowell, who led the league among qualifiers. In the ALCS against Baltimore he took the loss, striking out six in 5 1/3 innings.
Tom Hall was a left-handed pitcher who spent ten seasons in the majors from 1968 to 1977 with the Minnesota Twins, Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets and Kansas City Royals. Listed at 6 feet and 150 pounds, he earned the nickname "the Blade" for his slender build. The Twins drafted him in the third round of the 1966 amateur draft, and he rose quickly through their minor league system before debuting in June 1968. Hall worked as both a starter and a reliever for Minnesota until a December 1971 trade sent him to Cincinnati. There he pitched in a bullpen with Clay Carroll and Pedro Borbon for the early Big Red Machine teams that won a National League pennant in 1972. He reached the postseason with three of his four clubs, Minnesota, Cincinnati and Kansas City. After his career ended in 1977, Hall worked as a supervisor at an aerospace company and later as a United States Postal Service mail carrier for two decades.
