1970 Topps #93 Rick Renick

About Rick Renick
Rick Renick opened 1969 as a backup third baseman and outfielder for the Twins, appearing in 71 games and batting .245 with 5 home runs and 17 RBI. He played 30 games at third base and 10 in the outfield, and came to the plate once in the ALCS sweep by Baltimore, without a hit. His 1970 Topps card is #93, from the first series. In 1970 he batted .229.
Rick Renick, born Warren Richard Renick in London, Ohio, played third base, left field and shortstop across parts of five big league seasons, all with the Minnesota Twins, after signing with the club out of Ohio State in 1964. A right-handed hitter and thrower listed at 6 feet, 188 pounds, he reached the majors in 1968 and homered off Detroit ace Mickey Lolich in his first big league at-bat, a blow that helped Minnesota win the game. Minnesota sent him to the minors after the 1972 season, but he kept playing professionally through 1978, closing out his playing days in the Montreal Expos organization. He finished with a .221 career batting average over 276 games. Renick later coached and managed. He spent 13 seasons on major league staffs with Kansas City, Montreal, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Florida, including time as Minnesota's third-base coach for the 1987 World Series champions. He was twice named American Association Manager of the Year as manager of the Nashville Sounds.
