1970 Topps #194 Chuck Manuel

About Chuck Manuel
Chuck Manuel, as Topps printed it, is on #194, his rookie card, in the second series with the Twins. The 1969 season behind it was his first in the majors: he made the club out of spring training under Billy Martin and played 83 games. He was hitting .311 at the end of May, then went hitless in 36 at-bats from July 20 to the end of the season. He finished at .207 with 24 RBIs. In 1970 he played 59 games for Minnesota but started six of them.
Charlie Manuel was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played parts of six major league seasons, four with the Minnesota Twins (1969-72) and two with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1974-75), and hit .198 with 4 home runs in 242 games. His larger playing career came in Japan, where he spent 1976 through 1981 with the Yakult Swallows and Kintetsu Buffaloes, hit 189 home runs, and won the 1979 Pacific League MVP award. He hit 48 home runs for Kintetsu in 1980. After scouting and minor league managing for the Twins and Cleveland, he served as the Indians' hitting coach and managed Cleveland from 2000 to 2002, winning the 2001 Central Division title. He then managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 2005 to 2013, won five straight NL East titles from 2007 to 2011, and won the 2008 World Series. He finished with 780 wins as Phillies manager, a franchise record, and entered the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame in 2014.
