1970 Topps #146 Danny Murphy

About Danny Murphy
Murphy's #146 card, from the second series, shows him with the White Sox, for whom he made his pitching debut against Boston at Comiskey Park on August 11, 1969. He pitched all of 1970 in Chicago, going 2-3 with a 5.69 ERA and 5 saves. He allowed 82 hits and 49 walks in 80 2/3 innings, and on June 28 hit the fourth and last home run of his career, off Minnesota's Bill Zepp.
Danny Murphy, born Daniel Francis Murphy on August 23, 1942, in Beverly, Massachusetts, signed with the Chicago Cubs as an outfielder on June 15, 1960, following his graduation from St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers. His bonus is listed as $100,000 in one account and $130,000 in another. Three days later he started in center field at Crosley Field against Cincinnati, making his professional and major-league debut on the same day. On September 13, 1960, at 18 years and three weeks, he became the youngest Cub to hit a home run. He batted left and threw right, and he hit .171 over parts of three seasons with the Cubs before a spring-training trade to Houston in 1963. Six minor-league years and a switch to the mound later he returned as a right-handed reliever for the Chicago White Sox in 1969 and 1970, finishing 4-4 with a 4.66 earned run average and nine saves.
