1970 Topps #368 Ed Herrmann

About Ed Herrmann
Herrmann caught 92 games in 1969, hitting eight home runs with 31 RBI. In 1970 he played 96 games, 88 of them behind the plate. He drove in 52 runs and scored 42 that year. Card #368 is a third-series issue showing him with the White Sox.
Ed Herrmann was a left-handed-hitting catcher who spent eleven major league seasons, seven of them with the Chicago White Sox before finishing his career with the Yankees, Angels, Astros and Expos. Signed by the Milwaukee Braves in 1964 and drafted by the White Sox that same year, he broke in with Chicago in 1967. His best offensive season came in 1970, when he hit .283 with 19 home runs. Herrmann built a reputation as one of the American League's premier knuckleball catchers, working behind Hoyt Wilhelm, Wilbur Wood and Eddie Fisher, and he caught Wood through four consecutive 20-win seasons. He made the American League All-Star team in 1974. After his playing days ended in 1978, Herrmann scouted for the Kansas City Royals and coached youth teams in Southern California. He died in 2013 at age 67.
